Cupping! – What It can do for YOU & Why It is a Great Alternative Therapy

Cupping was first introduced by the ancient Egyptians around 1500BC and has since spread to ancient Greece, China and the western world. In fact, Hippocrates recommended cupping for treating illnesses such as angina, menstrual irregularities and other disorders.

Celebrities and Athletes love this popular therapy to aid and boost their performance, lift skin and blood flow and provide a natural detox too!

So, what is Cupping?

It is an alternative therapy that uses suction cups to stimulate your skin and muscles. Some liken it to the feeling of vacuum pressure in how it is used on the skin. There are many benefits-

  • Release scar tissue and fascial adhesions.
  • Reduce painful trigger points.
  • Improve circulation, blood and lymph circulation.
  • Relieve pain.
  • Promote mobility and range of motion.
  • Improves mature scars.
  • Decrease toxins

What to expect?

Cupping does involve a suction feeling on the skin, and you will be aware of this.  It should never be painful.  There is usually some short-term skin discolouration where the cupping was performed, which should not be painful and should resolve within 7 to 10 days.  It would be best to avoid shaving or exfoliating the area to be treated for a day before your appointment.

How Often should you have Cupping therapy?

This depends on what the goal of cupping is.   Most patients begin to feel improvement after their first treatment, but some take two or three sessions to experience real change. Effects tend to become longer-lasting over time.

Are there Contraindications to Cupping Therapy?

Yes, there are a few contraindications to cupping, and your therapist will do a thorough check of your medical history before commencing treatment.  Cupping is contraindicated in the following circumstances:

  • Patients that bruise easily or have a clotting disorder,
  • Patients on medication to thin the blood,
  • Patients with a history of blood clots or stroke
  • Over open wounds
  • Skin conditions such as Psoriasis or Eczema, sunburn or inflamed skin.
