Frequently Asked Questions

What age should I have a Pre-Pointe Assessment?

We generally recommend a Pre-Pointe Assessment from around 11 years of age.

We do not recommend starting pointe work before this age because of skeletal maturity and physical development.

Every dancer develops at a different rate. An individual assessment can help determine whether you are ready to progress safely to pointe shoes.

What Do I Need to Bring?

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows your physiotherapist to clearly assess your movement and alignment.

Suitable clothing includes:

  • Dancewear
  • Tight-fitting activewear

How Can I Prepare for My Assessment?

Dancing and movement are natural – going on pointe is not. Pointe work places significant demands on the feet, ankles and lower limbs. For this reason, strength and control are especially important.

One simple way to prepare is to work on your calf strength. Try:

  • Rising onto one leg
  • Lowering slowly with control
  • Gradually increasing your repetitions until your calf muscles fatigue

Continue working with your dance teacher on posture, strength and movement control. Your teacher knows how your dancing has progressed over time and plays an important role in preparing you for pointe work.

Will I Know If I Am Ready for Pointe after assessment?

Yes.

At the end of your assessment, your physiotherapist will discuss the results with you.  We will let you know whether you are ready to be fitted for pointe shoes or whether there are areas you need to work on first.

If you are not quite ready, that is okay. We will explain what you need to improve and provide a tailored program to help you progress safely towards pointe work.

Will I Receive a Report?

Yes.

After your assessment, we will email you a written report that includes:

  • Your assessment findings
  • Recommendations
  • Areas for improvement
  • Guidance on progressing to pointe work

Reports are generally emailed within a few days of your appointment.

Will I Need Further Appointments?

Every dancer is different.

Some dancers are ready for pointe following their assessment. Others benefit from additional physiotherapy to improve strength, control, flexibility or technique before progressing.

Most dancers require between 1 and 5 sessions to achieve readiness for pointe shoes.

Our physiotherapists will guide you through the process and help you prepare safely for the demands of pointe work.
