This program is suitable for anyone experiencing hip and/or knee pain or symptoms of osteoarthritis, regardless of severity. It is recommended as a first-line treatment in current national and international guidelines.

What does the program involve?

The GLA:D® program is run by accredited physiotherapists and includes:

  • Initial assessment – to explain the program and measure your current functional ability.

  • Two education sessions – covering osteoarthritis, its risk factors, treatment options, and effective self-management strategies.

  • Supervised group exercise classes – twice a week for six weeks, focusing on improving strength, joint control, mobility, and confidence.

  • Follow-up review at 3 months – to track your progress and re-measure outcomes.

  • Ongoing monitoring – participants complete questionnaires at the start, 3 months, and 12 months to measure changes in pain, function, quality of life, and medication use.

The exercises and education are designed to be practical and transferable to everyday activities, empowering you to manage symptoms and maintain an active lifestyle long-term.

What results can I expect?

Research from the GLA:D® Australia Annual Report 2023 found:

  • Reduced pain – on average 23% less for hip pain and 31% less for knee pain.

  • Improved quality of life – by 24% for hip participants and 38% for knee participants.

  • Less reliance on medication – with a 46% reduction for hip and 50% reduction for knee.

  • Fewer people seeking surgery – showing that education and exercise can provide a safe and effective alternative to invasive procedures.

By completing the program, participants often feel stronger, more confident, and better able to enjoy everyday life and activities.
